Returning from an overseas assignment, Bernard Byrd finds two separate letters summoning him to the last place he wants to be - home. Due to a tragedy that occurred there, it’s been years since he’s shown his face and the idea of returning to South Florida doesn’t have him thinking about palm trees and sandy beaches. But while he isn't itching for a homecoming, these letters have him intrigued. The first is from a stranger named Kayla Chalmers claiming to be a friend of his late Uncle Marvin. The second letter is from a lawyer representing his uncle’s estate and calling on him and Kayla to come claim their inheritance. Besides having not spoken to his uncle in years, it was common knowledge that Marvin died disgraced and penniless. What could he possibly have to leave anybody?
Bernard returns home to straighten out what he’s sure is a mistake, but keeps finding things that don’t make sense. A mysterious will, a cryptic message and a pile of money will pair him with a total stranger and send them on a most implausible quest. Over the next few days, Bernard will come to question everything he thought he knew about his uncle. Maybe things were never as they seemed. Maybe Bernard’s demons and Marvin’s demons are intertwined somehow. But one thing seems clear; a dead man is trying to tell a secret, and dead men often have deadly secrets. If Bernard and his new friend Kayla aren’t careful, this might be a one way trip.

This was not your classic mystery. Bernie Byrd has just returned from an over-seas job with a government outfit to find out that his dead uncle who hasn't had two nickels to rub together in years has left him some sort of legacy. So a skeptical Bernie has to fly down to Florida to get the details. Bernie's uncle does not do the easy thing and just tell him what his inheritance is and where to find it. Instead he leads him and his companion through a series of puzzles to their grand prize.Finding the grand prize also solves a few mysteries too. Readers will enjoy this one.

I enjoyed this book. It kept my interest throughout. One of the best things that I liked was the geographical setting. It was true to Delray Beach and south Palm Beach County. The mystery plot kept me guessing. And the reveal was satisfying. I'm looking forward to another Byrd mystery.
If you love a good mystery with tons of action and drama...this is the book for you! I loved everything about this book from start to finish and didn't want to put it down. Things are definitely not what they seem in this story and will leave you on the edge of your seat at the end of each chapter. The author really outdid himself with this book, and I'm looking forward to reading more of his work soon!!
I can't tell you enough, about how awesome this book is. You really just read it for yourself. The story is very well-written, and the plot leaves you guessing down to the last minute. Be warned once you start reading, you won't want to put this one down! Five stars all the way!!!! You're going to want to tell your friends about this one!
I think the author did a great job with his first book. The plot development kept my attention throughout and the storyline was unpredictable. I enjoyed the bits of realistic humor that come when dealing with family dynamics. Good job Mr. Lockett! I look forward to the next one!
Steven Lockett shows a lot of promise as a new writer. As a former resident of South Florida, I particularly enjoyed learning more about Delray Beach and Boynton Beach. Steven captures the 'hood and the people with color and clarity. The story was well told, and the prose very readable. Good job!
This was a fun, page-turning little read. The Lockett family has been friends for many years and it was exciting to see this new writer's first mystery. Especially interesting to me was being able to identify with the streets and locations used in the book after having lived in South Florida. Looking forward to the sequel, Steven!! Great storytelling!
I liked the book. I am looking forward to the next mystery and hope it will be a bit more complex than this one. There is definitely room for the author to grow but I do think that this a good first book. The first chapter or so was a bit unusual as a start for a mystery and sort of left me a bit perplexed, and diminished my expectations moving forward, but I read the book in less than two days. I did so only because I had other affairs to attend to. Otherwise, I might have been unable to put it down. It kept my attention. The premise is a solid one, the characters are real and flawed as should be, and the story was unpredictable. It was a good suspense and it comes together very cleanly at the end. Looking for a higher level of suspense and more complexities in this author’s future work.
